blind man

golden rays dip behind the mountain

to rest for the night.

ponderosa pines fade to black silhouettes.

i can almost grasp it.

they look to the sky,

and i too,

until mud seizes my ankles and my eyes cloud over

and pitch black becomes my name.

i unearth that i am blind.

a song is slightly muted in my ears,

i guess the words.

but i stumble and mumble and

get it all wrong.

diamond shades of blue and

they are gleaming against the sky.

i wipe the tears away from my eyes.

i did not think i would be the one to lose the thing i valued most.

i do not know east from west,

nor mount zion from siloam.

brutal sun turning skin to dust,

wastelands have nothing to quench thirst.

staggering steps and no sight,

off i go.

the only solid thing i have is written on my heart.
